In an earlier post I mentioned the problems operational managers, knowledge managers and experts have with delivering a sound business case for renewal of the knowledge management approach (or investment in their system).
In a recent email conversation with Daniel Robles he delivered his point of view to me:
Also, we define innovation as the rate of change of knowledge with respect to time. So in order to measure innovation, you simply look for high rates of change of knowledge. In order to measure knowledge, you look for high rates of change of information. This is where KM can be quite useful as a proxy for innovation, and similarly, information effectiveness.
The past was for companies with an emphasis on cost and quality, the present is for companies looking for flexibility. And as in my opinion the enterprise of the future is built on knowledge and innovation in networks.
One might consider – thanks to Daniel – that renewal of knowledge management processes or systems is a proxy for innovation.
Do you agree?

Knowledge management has great potential to be infrastructural aid to building value through innovation. But, it will require a mental shift on the part of IT and KM managers.
